Excerpt from "The Miraculous Health Properties of Vinegar' by J. Aubry.
Dr. Jarvis, noticing how healthy his cohabitants were he soon realised that cider vinegar, a traditional loval remedy, was largely responsible.
'We are talking about nonpasteurised cider vinegar made from ripe apples, and ideally from apples that have been organically grown...... In fact, for over two centuries many Vermonters had been in the habit of taking a daily tablespoon of cider vinegar, mixed with a tablespoon of nonpasteurised honey, dissolved in a glass of water. They claim the habit has many health
benefits....'
Jarvis says it is all a question of pH. Your pH level indicates the acid-alkaline balance of your system: your level of acidity compared to your level of alkalinity......'
'It comes down to eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains; (which authorities are telling to do) to increase intake of acidic foods. That will have an alkalising effect on your system.
Reduce your intake of alkaline foods (which acidify your system when ingested): cut down on meat, legumes, tomatoes, oil and other types of fat, cheese, egg whites, processed foods and sugar.'
Mannatech with founder Sam Caster have established glyconutrients worldwide giving optimal health and well being. Mannatech's essential glyconutrients provide the eight essential sugars necessary to make the required glycoproteins. Glyconutrients give the cell-to-cell communication required to defend against disease and illness.

Avoiding Alzheimer's Disease
Whilst reading 'Woman's Weekly September 2007' I found the very interesting article 'Yasmin Aga Khan: a troubling legacy' by Dian Guernsey.
Yasmin daughter of Rita Hayworth, the beautiful Hollywood's impossibly beautiful red-haired actress, cared for her mother who, it was eventually discovered, had Alzheimer's disease.
Yasmin gave up her classical music and voice career to care for her mother and after her death in 1987 has spent time with"The Alzheimer's Association" which became her family. She appeared before the US Congress to argue for more research funding etc. and organised the first, hugely successful Rita Hayworth dinner and dance in 1984.
Dementia affects more than 200,000 people in Australia and 60% of those have Alzheimer's disease. Research suggests that dementia starts several decades before symptoms appear, "so the lifestyle choices you make now can help keep your brain healthy in later years", says Glenn Rees, national executive director of Alzheimer's Australia.
'Strategies include exercising at least three times a week to encourage blood flow to the brain; eating a diet high in fish, olive oil, nuts and anti-oxidant-rich foods eg. blueberries and broccoli; keeping neural pathways limber through activities such as crosswords, painting and reading; kicking bad habits, such as smoking.'
Mannatech Inc and founder Sam Caster, have produced glyconutrients and anti-oxidant products giving optimal health and wellness. Glyconutrients give the body's immune system the eight plant-based sugars it needs to function properly.

Seek Natural Sources
From Article as featured in Health & Living, V2,N7
'When synthetic chemicals were first introduced ihn the 1940's, doctors turned to synthetic hormones to help women control hormone-related symptoms. Everyone was assured that synthetic hormones were wonderful. They seemed to be the answer to the ravages of aging, heart disease and osteoporosis.
Recently, the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study showed conclusively that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) doesn't do what the experts believed. In fact, the study showed that HRT actually increases the risk of heart disease and various cancers. While the study showed it does reduce bone fractures by 33% and colon cancer by 37%, HRT actually increases the incidence of breast cancer by 26%, heart attack by 29%, cardiovascular disease by 22%, stroke by 41% and blood clots by 100%.
Clearly the answer to help your body deal with hormone-related symptoms during each phase of your life is, as always, the answer is found in nature not the synthetic chemistry.'
Mannatech Inc. with the founder, Sam Caster, have produced within their glyconutrient Optimal Health Products, PLUS, which provides the glyconutrient support you need to help maintain menstrual health. PLUS, containing a proprietary blend of phytohormones, relieves menstrual symptoms and assists in the maintenance of general wellbeing.

The Secret of Tomatoes!
We have all heard that tomatoes are good for prostate in men and much is said about the Mediterranean diet - attributed to the high number of one hundred year olds, particularly on the island of Crete. The olive oil is said to be the number one reason.
Latest research indicates that it is the tomato, rich in lycopene, which extends the life of the island's residents. (Lycopene also reduces the risk of prostate cancer by 40%, according to the work of W. Giovanuci, Harvard Medical School) However raw tomatoes and tomato juice contain lycopene that is difficult to absorb. Tomatoes must be prepared in a special way in order to take full advantage of their benefits.
Lycopene is in papaya (paw paw) and above all ripe tomatoes. Lycopene is absorbed by the classic route taken by carotenoids, says Dr. J. P. Willem in 'The Keys to Extraordinary Longevity'. 'Tomatoes cooked in the presence of lipids increases its absorption (stuffed tomatoes) and lipids liberate the most lycopene which can be directly assimilated by the body.' Lipid is a substance which has the general properties of fats, so I guess this is where the olive oil comes in to play.
Mannatech Inc. with founder Sam Caster, produced glyconutrients on a world wide scale.
Modern farming practices have dramatically compromised the nutritional value of many fruits and vegetables. And while experts agree that supplementation can provide the body with these missing nutrients, many supplements contain synthetic, chemically derived, mined or chelated minerals and vitamins that studies show are not readily absorbed or used by the body. Mannatech's supplements with glyconutrients give optimal health and well being.

Are You an Apple or a Pear?
Information from 'Win the War Within' by Floyd H. Chilton, Ph.D.
'If you are over weight or obese, the location of those extra pounds makes a big difference in the degree whole-body inflammation.
People who carry most of their excess weight around their middles (the so-called apple shape) release significantly more inflammatory messengers than those who carry most of their extra weight in their buttocks and thighs (the pear shape). It doesn't take a whole lot of fat in the wrong place to contribute to low levels of who-body inflammation. recent studies have demonstrated that even mildly obese people with abdominal fat are much more likely to develop inflammation that leads to coronary artery disease.
Abdominal obesity is generally considered to be a waist circumference, as measured around the navel, of greater than for 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women. It is the defining characteristic of metabolic syndrome, a condition that also may include high blood pressure, elevate cholesterol, and insulin resistance. An estimated 20-25 % of American adults already have metabolic syndrome, which is recognized as a major risk factor for heart disease and diabetes. Some research suggests that by the year 2020, metabolic syndrome may affect 40% of the U.S. population.
One of the main reasons that abdominal fat is thought to be so dangerous to your health is that it's located right next to your internal organs- most importantly, to your liver. The inflammatory messengers produced by abdominal fat are released directly into the portal vein, which feeds into the liver. This prompts the liver to produce more of its own inflammatory messengers, creating a vicious cycle.'
As a pioneer and world leader in the field of Glyconutrients, Mannatech with Sam Caster, occupies a unique niche in the dynamic field of carbohydrate technology. Glyconutrients provide building blocks for healthy cells.

Undie Mundie for Cancer Awareness
Information from "Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia"
Did you hear or see about the world's biggest underpants? They were unveiled on the hallowed turf of the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Victoria, Australia. It happened on the Queen's Birthday Holiday Monday (1st Monday of June), to let all and sundry know about the risk of prostate cancer for Australian Men.
You see - they don't like going to visit the doctors! 'The fact that more than 2,900 men die each year from prostate cancer means that an Australian male dies from prostate cancer every three hours - and symbolically this was highlighted by the 3 pairs of the world's biggest undies.....
Melbourne Football Club Chairman, Mr. Paul Gardner, said dedicating the Queen's Birthday match to prostate cancer was important to the club, as many high profile former players were prostate cancer survivors'.
"Glyconutritionals, (including glyconutrients) including mannose, fucose and glucose, have been documented to be therapeutic and even life saving." - Royal Society of Medicine Conference, Glycobiology & Medicine, 2000......... There are myriad factors to ensure good health, and no nutrient stands alone, But clearly without cell-to-cell communication, you have no hope for good health because without communication (or signaling), there can be no function,' says Dr. Nugent.
Glyconutrients produced by Mannatech Inc and Sam Caster, are necessary in our body for cell-to-cell communication. Glyconutrients helps the body's cell function to do what they are designed to do.

Allergy at Springtime
Planting the right type of trees, flowers for a sneeze-free garden is a necessity for some allergy sufferers who endure unpleasant symptoms of hay fever each spring.
If you are a sufferer of allergies or asthma, here are three things you can do to improve the situation immediately:
- Don't go out into the garden on windy days when pollen is blowing everywhere. Conversely take care on hot still days because pollen hangs in the air.
- Keep weeds down as they produce lots of pollen
- Don't have your own compost heap. These are havens for fungi and spores which cause reactions.
Flowers are still okay although you should avoid all daisy-like flowers. There are still plenty of flowers to include in your garden. French lavender, roses gardenias, azaleas, jasmine, clematis and boronia are all ideal in the low-allergy garden. However each individual should discover if any of these will have an effect on you.
If you love a lawn then sow or lay buffalo grass or 'Greenlees Park' couch. Most grasses have a high pollen count and spell disaster for most hay fever and asthma sufferers. Perhaps it is best to let others mow the lawn or do it early in the morning when the dew is still present.
Trees to avoid are Wattle, Birch, Olive, Walnut, Maple, Oak, Privet, Cypress, Willow and Elm.
Mannatech's products PhytoMatrix, introduced last year by Chairman, Sam Caster, contains vitamins and phytochemicals. Glyconutrients in PhytoMatrix provides greater absorption of nutrients than other existing supplements technologies.

Loosing the Inches!
Titbit from 'Prevention- The Breakthrough Science of Weight Loss' By Dr. R. K. Cooper.
This is great news! Just imagine - small, almost invisible changes in your life will help retain or get you back to that ideal shape. It's not difficult or time-consuming. The very essence of simplicity! Keep reading-
- Ice-water is the secret for boosting metabolism- A German study recently concluded that slowly sipping ice water boosted metabolism - the rate at which you burn calories, by more than 30% for 90 straight minutes. No exercise. No sweating. No dieting. No self-denial.
- Avoid overeating and still get your sweets - If you exceed 500-600 calories at dinner, you venture into the "fat-forming zone." Try postponing dessert by 2 hours. You'll digest most of your dinner, get in physical activity, and not pack on the additional calories of an added "bedtime" snack.
- The amazing anti-hunger hormone - One of your body's most powerful anti-hunger hormones is called cholecystokinin, or CCK. It's found inside your intestinal tract, and it helps signal your brain that you're full. So when CCK is high, you'll probably eat less at a single sitting.
- The fibre factor for weight loss and preventing disease - Adding more fibre to your diet has a stunning, positive impact on your health - and your waistline. It helps lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure. It helps reduce your risk for heart disease and cancer. For weight loss, high-fibre foods help stabilize your body's blood sugar levels and slow down the fat-making process in every corner of your body.
Sam Caster, Chairman and founder of Mannatech Inc., knows well from experience just how good glyconutrient products are from Mannatach. They have Fibre-Full, one of the supplements from the GlycoLean Body System weight loss program, as well as the GlycoSlim, formulated meal replacement drinks, giving healthy glyconutrients with wellness whilst losing weight.

Poor Physical Function and Dementia
Great news from 'Breakthroughs in Health' Vol 1 Issue 2
"Poor Physical Function May Increase the Risk for Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease", says Sherry Baker.
'Physical issues, not mental problems, may signal the beginning of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, says a joint study by Group Health Cooperative, a Seattle-based nonprofit healthcare system, and the University of Washington, The research, supported by the National Institute on Aging and reported in the medical journal Archives of Internal Medicine in May, provides yet another reason why it's important to exercise to stay healthy.
...."We had expected the earliest signs of dementia would be subtle cognitive changes," notes Eric B. Larson, M.D., M.P.H., who co-authored the study. "But we were surprised to find the physical changes can precede declines in thinking. That suggests that what is considered a brain disease may be intimately connected to physical fitness."
Specific physical weaknesses observed among participants at the beginning of the study turned out to be linked with cognitive problems later......"
The health mantra "Use it or lose it" can no longer be applied to the brain, muscles and heart separately, Dr. Larson says. "Now it appears 'use it or lose it' applies to all aspects of health and general functioning. There's good reason to think there is truly a mind and body connection, and you want to use them both. The results of our study show 'Use it even after you start to lose it' applies. If a person has begun to decline cognitively, it appears we might be able to forestall or reverse mental decline with exercise and efforts to maintain or improve physical function."
Mannatech's cutting-edge scientists have produced PhytoMatrix, a plant-sourced multivitamin and mineral supplement utilising proprietary technology to provide superior delivery of essential vitamin and minerals plus important phytochemicals.

Relaxing Massage
Delivering a delightfully relaxing massage can be a real gift. This ancient practice can soothe tense muscles, de-stress the mind, relax the body and revive the spirit.
The benefits keep flowing; massage increase blood flow and lymph circulation. This in turn carries oxygen and nutrients to cells and aids in the elimination of waste products. Massage also releases endorphins, our body's naturally produced feel-good, pain relieving chemicals.
Because if has been a therapeutic tool for thousands of years, there are various kinds of massage which emanate from different cultures. Basic massage techniques include Swedish and aromatherapy, while remedial and sports techniques help relieve the pain of physical injury. Professional therapists use shiatsu and reflexology to squeeze pressure points which can alleviate various problems in the body.
Touch is vital to our health and well being and massage is a gentle way to connect with the people we care about, regardless of age. You don't need expensive equipment, such as a massage table to give a massage. Here are some tips:
- Lower the lights. If it's during the day, be sure to draw the curtains and play some soothing music.
- Burn essential oils. Lavender is good for headache, for example.
For neck aches, relieve pressure around the neck and shoulders. Start by gently finding 'knots' or tensed muscles and push into these areas gently but firmly with your thumbs.
- For headaches. Squeezing and releasing or putting pressure on the head at the points where the pain is located can relieve discomfort and may help the recipient relax away the pain.
Glyconutrients support your body's natural ability to reach optimum nutritional levels and play a role in enhancing quality of life. Mannatech Inc produces glyconutrients and they are necessary in every cell in your body.

Nutritional Healing
Good advice from 'The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Women', Editors of Prevention Magazine Health Books.
Does it seem like the last cut you got took forever to heal? Did the bandage seem like part of life forever? Well, the right kind of first-aid, properly cleaning and dressing your wound, to prevent infection, plus good nutrition, plays a big part in speed-healing, says the experts.
"The most important part is to rinse away the dead and injured tissue and the debris that may be in a wound. Bacteria thrive on dead tissue. You want to bring up the fresh, uninjured tissue that heals quickly,' says Dr DiMaio. "Rinsing avoids scarring, if you leave dirt in a wound, not only are you risking infection, you're risking a bad scar- a scar pigmented by the dirt or debris left in it."
"Then smear antibiotic cream to prevent infection and cover the wound. Strong antiseptics containing alcohol or Mercurochrome are irritating - they're caustic, they sting and they kill the good cells in addition to the germs," she says.," says Dr DiMaio.
"People who eat well heal faster than people who don't," she says. "So when you're recovering from a wound, injury or illness, pay special attention to your diet."
Glyconutrition is provided by Mannatech Inc. in their new product PhytoMatrix, a plant-sourced multivitamin and mineral supplement utilising proprietary technology to provide superior important phytochemmicals.

The Soil of Today!
Taken from 'The Missing Nutrients' by Dr. Steve Nugent
Soil depletion has many causes but it is primarily a result of corporate farming methods. For thousands of years, farmers have known that soil rotation was essential in keeping the soil from becoming a useless wasteland. Today, in the name of profits, most corporate farms don't perform required soil maintenance. They simply add three items (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK), and sometimes calcium) to the soil. This makes the plants grow full of calories, water and fiber but void of the complete nutrition you need. This has been happening for fewer than 60 years, but getting worse every year. Eating fresh produce is a strong recommendation but do not be fooled. If it's not in the soil, it's not in the plant you eat!
There is unfortunately far too much produce being grown in soil that has less than the full complement of nutrients we need. "How can this be?" you might ask. It only takes NPK to make a plant grow, but it takes many more than those three nutrients to make and keep us healthy. Trace minerals are missing, or at least deficient, in many areas now. There is little hope of that situation improving in the near future. These trace minerals are required in micrograms, rather than milligrams, but the key word here is "required".
GlycoScience is designed to provide information on nutritional saccharides - glyconutritionals - that form the scientific underpinnings for Mannatech Inc. who are the leaders in glyconutrients.which give optimal health and well-being.

Every Day - A "Glyco-Day"
Excerpt from 'The Missing Nutrients' by Dr. Steve Nugent.
'What you have learned thus far about so-called alternative medicine (or what I prefer to call complementary medicine) you've learned with a Western biomedicine thought process. For instance, take the use of herbal medicine. As the name implies, this is when an herbal substance is used as a medicine. You have a symptom, you take the herbal for relief of the symptom. When you help support your body with that herbal (which is far less toxic than pharmaceutical drugs), your body, as long as it receives everything else it needs, can respond to the challenge and defend, heal and restore you.
Vitamins and minerals are essential for the process of assembling healthy cells as well as many other functions of the body, but glyconutrients and their corresponding proteins, are essential for cell-to-cell communication. If your cells cannot communicate, you have no function and, therefore, no hope. It's that simple and explains why glyconutrients were the most important health discovery (by Mannatech Inc.) of the 20th century.
Your doctor was probably taught that cell-to-cell communication was facilitated through amino acids...... The problem with the old theory is that amino acids can link in only two ways. A and B can link as Ab or BA. But glyconutrients are what biologists call ring structures. They have a carbon backbone and O (oxygen) and H (hydrogen) molecules attached. This allows sugars to link with a virtually infinite variety of combinations. This process is also the only thing that can facilitate cell-to-cell communication since it's the only way you can spell virtually every "word" necessary to communicate from one cell to another.

Beating The Common Cold
Taken from "Healing with Vitamins" - Dr. Elliot Dick is a professor of preventive medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and one of the country's most respected cold researchers.
Dr. Elliot Dick has given his formula for beating a cold:
He takes 2,000 milligrams of vitamin C an hour for 3 hours at the first sign of cold symptoms. "Usually the cold is gone by then , but if not, I'll take 1,000 mg an hour until it is . I thought it was a bunch of foolishness. Not anymore." (He cautions that daily doses of vitamin C larger than 1,200 mg can cause diarrhoea in some people, so experiment with the dose that's right for you.)
Vitamin C is amazing! Dozens of scientific studies have now proven that Vitamin C can , if taken in the right amounts, help to block cancer from forming in your body.
- It keeps arteries running clean and open, free of deadly plaque build-up.
- Prevents cataracts and preserve your clear vision for as long as you live.
- Greatly reduce your odds of suffering a heart attack...serve as a soothing balm to your allergies, ending wheezing and watery eyes.
- Dramatically lessen and even eliminate arthritis and joint pain, while building up strong new cartilage tissue and healthy ligaments.
- Boost your immune system so that you ca resist rampaging flu bugs and avoid having to stay at home, sick in bed.
- Keep your skin looking young, radiant, and wrinkle-free with a vitamin C skin cream.
And of course, let's not forget what made vitamin C famous - its fierce protective power against the common cold.
Mannatech Inc. are the leaders in glyconutrient industry and produce plant-based "health sugars". Their Manna-C product contains vitamin C giving optimal health and wellbeing.

Stop Colds This Winter
Adapted from 'Go' Magazine -Boost your Immunity this Winter by Madeline Jennings
'Your immune system is your very own defence force that protects your body against invasion by harmful bacteria, viruses, toxins and other foreign organisms. You can train and stimulate your defence force to work at its best. The best way to enhance your immune system is to have overall good health. In a nutshell, this means eating a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water, getting enough rest, supplementing where appropriate and being able to unwind from physical and mental stress.'
Developing Immunity - '....... The immune system has an amazing ability to remember past encounters with foreign invaders. So, when macrophages (white blood cells) recognise a foreign microbe as a previous encounter, it communicates this to the B-lymphocytes, which quickly provide the antibodies to destroy it (this is why B-lymphocytes are also known as memory cells). Once your body has produced antibodies to a certain microbe - a specific flu virus strain, for example - that virus cannot make you sick again because your immune system (when healthy) immediately recognises it and has the antibodies to destroy it. This is what is known as acquired immunity.'
Mannatech's cutting edge scientists have produced PhytoMatrix a plant-sourced multivitamin and mineral supplement utilising proprietary technology to provide superior essential vitamin and minerals also AO - their antioxidants - which support your body's natural ability to protect against free radicals.

Body Mass Index
According to Dr Steve Nugent in his book "The Genetic Key Diet" he suggest you return to the original recommendation of percent body fat and inches to keep track of weight.
'.......When you start on the system, weigh yourself the first day Then, using a tailor's tape, measure the appropriate areas of the body. Once a week, re-measure each area. Measure your progress in inches, not pounds. If you wish to weigh yourself, do so no more frequently than once per week and only first think in the morning. Even then, scale weight is still not a very accurate gauge of healthy body composition.
Weight loss plans that advertise weight loss as much as a pound a day, or ten pounds a week, are plans that are clearly not measuring fat loss. It will be almost physiologically impossible to lose more than two pounds of pure body fat per seven-day period. There may be rare exceptions but they will be rare indeed. If you are losing more than that, then you are displacing water, and perhaps cannibalizing muscle tissue as fuel. And in some cases, you may also lose bone mass on diets, if these diets are not properly balanced and have the proper dietary supplements. Bone is highly nutritious, not as nutritious as muscle but more nutritious than fat so the body will eat muscle, bone, then fat, in that order when it's starving for nutrients.....'

Mannatech Coined the Word Glyconutrients
The Real Story that ABC’s 20/20 Investigators Missed
ABC’s 20/20 story on Mannatech – Why did ABC not finish their investigation on Mannatech?
By Mark Johnson, June 2, 2007
“Is there any valid scientific evidence that this Mannatech product really works?” Dr. Schnaar responds by referencing the National Library of Medicine www.PubMed.org) as the main repository of medical knowledge. Then with intentioned drama, he looks at the reporter and makes a circle with his right hand and says quite emphatically, "Zero." Well, he is absolutely correct, because "Ambrotose" is a company brand name. The term "glyconutrients" or “glyco-nutrients” is the word that Mannatech coined as a new generic term for scientists to use in research papers.
Glyconutrients are found to be essential in the production of glycoproteins made in human cells (Harper's Biochemistry Textbook, 24th ed. and later). There are many listings on PubMed for “glyconutrients.” Basic common sense confirms that scientific journals, papers and research, all use terms like “glyco-nutrients,” "glycoprotein," "glycoconjugate," "glycoform," "mannose,"
"fucose," "xylose," etc... Journals report on the science, not on a particular company's name or brand names. As an example, published papers focus on the results of clinical studies using “monosaccharides” and “oligosaccharides.”
Mannatech filmed the interview between ABC reporter and CEo Sam Caster. To see full interview, to to www.youtube.com and enter "mannatech" in search box.

The Friendly Herb
There are many herbs that we are just finding out exactly what they are really good for and what negative effects they can have on us generally.
Just reading an article which suggests Angelica (Angelica sinensis) can help with the digestive system. Used by the Chinese women to keep them strong and vibrant from puberty on, these Practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine believe that angelica makes periods less painful, enables conception, eases childbirth, and helps ensure an easier menopause as well as a digestive stimulant. Seems like a miraculous herb! We do have to be aware if there are bleeding disorders as Angelica thins the blood.
It is also researched to show that Angelica compounds bind to circulating free radicals, thereby rendering them harmless. Free radicals are highly reactive chemicals produced by the body that can accelerate the aging process by damaging the body inside and out.
Our immune function lessens with age and with fewer immune cells patrolling the body for foreign invaders (bacteria and viruses) and cancer cells, we become more vulnerable to infection and cancer. Researchers have found that angelica stimulates the production and activity of immune cells.

Powerhouse Super Food
Coaxing children to eat vegies is a fun process. Broccoli is really easy - just tell the kids we are eating green trees and it really excites their imagination.
Broccoli is one of nature's best super foods, a nutrient-packed vegetable that provides the body with a wide range of vitamins, minerals, fibre and antioxidants. Very few kilojoules, like its relatives cabbage and cauliflower, broccoli has been shown to reduce the risk of bowel cancer. The ingredients responsible are the strong-smelling sulfur compounds known as indoles and isothiocyanates, which seem to 'switch on' cancer-fighting enzymes and block carcinogens from entering the body.
Another dietary factor that keeps the bowel healthy is broccoli's high fibre content. This soluble form of fibre is ultra-filling and good for appetite control, as well as helping to lower blood cholesterol in a similar way to oats, by binding to the cholesterol and 'sweeping' it out of the bowel, preventing it from being reabsorbed into the body where it causes health problems.
Cook broccoli carefully, as boiling will reduce its nutrient content by about half. To minimise the loss of nutrients, use as little water as possible and bring it to the boil before adding the broccoli. Cook until just tender when the stalk is pierced with a knife, then serve immediately. Or steam or microwave it, so you don't need to use any water at all.
I definitely steam my vegies, especially broccoli, even then one has to be vigilant not to overcook. Blanching may be the best or even raw in salads for crunch. Cook with stock, garlic and onion, then puree to make soup.

No Need for Man-made Trans Fat!
Trans fats turn up naturally in milk and meat - in tiny amounts. But it's the man-made version that's causing all the trouble. When vegetable oil and hydrogen are put together under tremendous pressure, the resulting fat provides a taste and consistency that drives consumers wild. Manufacturers now use it in nearly everything, from margarine and shortening to cookies, granola bars, bean dip, and frozen french fries. Chain restaurants love the oil because it keeps their partially fried foods from spoiling while they're being shipped all over the country.
Research shows the fat can drive 'bad' LDL cholesterol levels up and hart-protective HDLl cholesterol levels down. For women, a diet rife with trans fats doubles the risk of heart disease. Part of the danger stems from the fat's structure, which is quire stiff. This characteristic makes trans fats tough for the body to break down and clear from the blood - giving them time to lodge in a artery walls.
The heart evidence is so dramatic that the US Institute of Medicine ( IOM), a group of scientists that advises the nation on health issues, recommended in 2002 that we keep our intake of trans fats as low as possible. 'As it is not a nutrient there is no reason for anyone to consume added trans fat,' says Alice Lichtenstein, a professor of nutrition at the Friedman School of Nutrition at Tufts University. 'These fats are just not necessary.'

Bird Rehabilitation
Whilst travelling along our highways we often find animals and birds having been hurt and taken to care centres for rehabilitation. This informative article was interesting reading in Attracting Birds to you Garden by John Dengate.
Getting birds back into their natural environment can take an enormous amount of ability, time and money and is best handles by those who know what they're doing. The intricacies of rehabilitating birds are best illustrated by the example of an abandoned kite chick.
Kites, hawks, owls and eagles require a balanced diet of mice and birds to provide the roughage and nutrients they need to develop properly. Using substitute foods can cause serious damage. Once the kite chick is older it needs to learn to hunt for itself. The ancient European technique of falconry is the best way to teach it.
When the chick can catch mice in a large cage, it is transferred into a 'hacking' cage. This is an enclosure in an area where the bird's natural prey is plentiful. One end of the cage is open so the bird can fly out to hunt. In the cage, food is provided so the bird will be okay if it doesn't catch enough. Usually after a few weeks, the bird will be able to look after itself.
This process, termed 'hacking' the bird back into the wild, can be very successful if sufficient time and expertise is put into it.
Just as humans need roughage, kites and falcons need roughage from fur or feathers to develop properly.
Glyconutrients are generally missing from our diet but is necessary for optimal health and wellbeing in humans.

Blemished versus Unblemished
This is from an interesting article I read which gives wise interpretation to blemished fruit.
'Although many gardeners are quite happy to tolerate the odd pest and occasional chewed leaf in the garden, far less are satisfied eating fruit with the odd bug hole or brown spot. However, perfect, unblemished fruit is probably the result of intensive spraying. If the grower waited long enough between spraying and harvesting, and if the companies that assure you the product was harmless are right, you have nothing to worry about. If either of these assumptions is wrong, you're probably better off choosing the fruit with the odd spot on it. Behind the blemish is likely to be a tastier, more wholesome product'.
"From Attracting Birds in Your Garden" by John Dengate.
The fruit and veggies in the markets today mostly look spectacular with no marks or if there is a blemish we usually leave the product on the shelf. We find the more expensive organic products do sometimes have more blemishes or marks than other sprayed produce which reminds me of the beautiful plum tree that was grown in our back yard by my father. The plums were huge and had white flesh with rosy colour on the skin. The taste was superb and delicious. Eventually though after a few years of fruiting the grubs (fruit fly) found their way into the fruit. The plums were so tasty we would cut out the grub and eat the fruit as they were so big there was plenty left. We were very disappointed when the tree had to be cut down.
The fruit we eat these days does not have the vitamins and minerals in the same quantity as it did fifty years ago. Glyconutrient supplements produced by Mannatech, are essential to humans and generally missing from our diet. Glyconutrients are needed in our diet for optimal health and goodness.

Can Evolution Explain Complete Metamorphosis?
An interesting artical from Creation Magazine - Vol.29 No. 3 June-Aug 2007
In a 1999 issue of Nature, two scientists (James Truman & Lyn Riddiford) presented their hypothesis of how complete insect metamorphosis evolved. In the article the authors tried to explain the evolution of four-stage metamorphosis from three-stage metamorphosis by proposing that the latter actually contains four stages. They called this arbitrarily-defined fourth stage the 'pronymph', and described it to be a period which always precedes the first moult, and which varies in duration among different species, sometimes ending as soon as the insect hatches out of its egg. This 'pronymph', they argued, evolved into our modern larva.
In plainer terms, some ancient insect hatched out of its egg too soon and began groping around for food. It continued evolving until it could spend many weeks in this premature, caterpillar-like form, before finally metamorphosing into the long-belated nymph stage - which according to the authors had shortened and evolved into our modern pupa.
Our fatal problem with this idea is that the underdeveloped 'pronymph', as described in Nature, doesn't eat! It would need a fully formed digestive tract and the capability to bite, chew and swallow if it were to survive and grow into an adult. Truman and Riddiford argued that the 'pronymph' overcame these difficulties and gradually evolved until it could eat, move, and presumably defend itself. Defence is very important in a world of 'survival of the fittest', and it boggles the mind how the first premature 'pronymph' was safer and better favoured by evolution than a normal, fully developed nymph!
A better explanation is that four-stage metamorphosis was created independently and completely functional.

Herbs for Winter
Winter savory is an insignificant looking bush, about ankle-high, with tiny white summer flowers. It's not the most spectacular herb in the garden, but the great virtue of winter savory is that it smells gorgeous in the colder months when some other herbs, such as basil and tarragon, die down or, like marjoram, lose a lot of their fragrance.
Winter savory needs a rich, moist soil and full sun. Prune it every year when it has finished flowering, otherwise it gets "woody" and the old stems can rot.
Pick the leaves often. Use them in stuffing for a roast chook, or with white sauces for vegies. In past times, when dried beans were one of the winter staples, winter savory was often cooked with them, and it's good with fresh green beans, too. Just add a few leaves to the water when you boil beans, or put the leaves on top of the beans in the steamer. I like to toss new potatoes in melted butter or margarine and add a few leaves of winter savory.
Mannatech products are at the cutting edge of nutritional science; glyconutrients, necessary for optimal health and wellbeing.

Re-Emerging Infections Related to Food
Taken from Health and Living Volume 2, Number 2
Global Health Challenges Still Abound
Viruses are the smallest known forms of life. They are responsible for a wide range of diseases in humans, ranging from the common cold and flu to smallpox, AIDS and hepatitis.
New and re-emerging infectious diseases or those that have been recently discovered have increased in humans during the last 20 years or threaten to grow in the near future. The resurgence of tuberculosis, including antibiotic-resistant strains, and the spread of other diseases regarded until recently as under control- such as cholera and yellow fever-are good examples.
Some examples of resurgence of infectious diseases include cholera in Latin America, yellow fever in Kenya (where the disease had never been recorded before) and diphtheria in Russia.
These examples vividly illustrate that the world remains extremely vulnerable to new and re-emerging infections, and they emphasize the need for increased vigilance, said Dr. James LeDuc of The World Health Organization Division of Communicable Diseases.
Research has proved that glyconutrients are essentially a great benefit for health and well being.

Take Two AA-Blocking Supplements
What great news!!
I received a booklet in the mail. I was so excited that I read it from front to back and sent away the card inside.
"Win the War Within" by Dr Floyd H. Chilton, Ph.D. - is the next big thing for me.
Sounds incredible! Dr says is will create a media firestorm like nothing you have ever seen.
Why? B ecause is holds the potential for healing and reversing virtually every major disease and chronic condition that you may face in your lifetime. And that includes Heart disease, Atherosclerosis, Arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, Diabetes, Digestive problems, Liver problems, Allergies, and even Cancer and others, the lists goes on.
The Secret, lies with the release of chemical messengers such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes. When your body produces the right amount of these chemical messengers, your immune system works beautifully. But when you produce too much of these chemicals, the inflamation process spreads like wildfire. Dr Chilton says he likes to think of prostaglandins and leukotrienes as the "lighter fluid" your body produces when inflammation goes out of control.
So we've got to halt your body's bad habit of pumping out excess prostaglandins and leukotrienes. As it turns out, that's far easier than we ever imagined. Why? Because we now know that your cells need a special fatty acid called arachidonic acid or AA to creat excess prostalandins and leukotrienes. Without a sufficient supply of AA, your body just doesn't have the "raw material" it needs to flood your system with these inflammation-triggering messengers.

Psychological Stress and the Our Immune System
A Meta-Analytic Study of 30 Years of Inquiry
Suzanne C. Segerstrom University of Kentucky
Gregory E. Miller University of British Columbia
The present report meta-analyzes more than 300 empirical articles describing a relationship between psychological stress and parameters of the immune system in human participants. Acute stressors (lasting minutes) were associated with potentially adaptive upregulation of some parameters of natural immunity and downregulation of some functions of specific immunity. Brief naturalistic stressors (such as exams) tended to suppress cellular immunity while preserving humoral immunity. Chronic stressors were associated with suppression of both cellular and humoral measures. Effects of event sequences varied according to the kind of event (trauma vs. loss). Subjective reports of stress generally did not associate with immune change. In some cases, physical vulnerability as a function of age or disease also increased vulnerability to immune change during stressors.
Despite nearly a century of research on various aspects of stress, investigators still find it difficult to achieve consensus on a satisfactory definition of this concept. Most of the studies contributing to this review simply define stress as circumstances that most people would find stressful, that is, stressors. We adopted Elliot and Eisdorfer’s (1982) taxonomy to characterize these stressors. This taxonomy has the advantage of distinguishing among stressors on two important dimensions: duration and course (e.g., discrete vs. continuous). The taxonomy includes five categories of stressors.
Acute time-limited stressors involve laboratory challenges such as public speaking or mental arithmetic. Brief naturalistic stressors, such as academic examinations, involve a person confronting a real-life short-term challenge. In stressful event sequences, a focal event, such as the loss of a spouse or a major natural disaster, gives rise to a series of related challenges. Although affected individuals usually do not know exactly when these challenges will subside,
they have a clear sense that at some point in the future they will.
Chronic stressors, unlike the other demands we have described, usually pervade a person’s life, forcing him or her to restructure his or her identity or social roles.

Sugars - Biologically Relevant!
Title - Sugar Rush
New Scientist Vol 176 issue 2366 - 26/10/2002
Indeed, scientists are saying that glycomics could fuel a revolution in biology to rival that of the human genome. But it's not going to be easy. "If you ask, what is the glycome for a single cell type, it's probably many thousands of times more complex than the genome," says Ajit Varki, director of the Glycobiology Research and Training Center at the University of California, San Diego. "It's going to be a tough business."
Consider the complexity and subtlety of sugars, and it quickly becomes apparent that "tough" is, if anything, an understatement. For a start, the glycome's basic building blocks are far more numerous and varied than the four letters of the DNA alphabet or the score of amino acids that make proteins.
The complex sugar molecules that help make living things tick are all built up from simple sugars, or "monosaccharides" such as glucose, and about 10 others. Two ring-shaped monosaccharide molecules can link together to form a disaccharide, the other main building block of complex sugars. Things are made more complex because there are several different ways for the monosaccharides to link together, which leave the two units angled in different directions.
The problem only gets worse as monosaccharide and disaccharide units link together to form polysaccharides, the chains of sugars which in turn form the giant structures of complex sugars. These massive molecules, which can contain more than 200 units, not only come as long chains, but also as intricately branched structures that decorate the surfaces of cells like a forest of sugary filigree. It's the three-dimensional shape of these sugars that is key to their functions, such as cell recognition. And there's a further complication: different atoms or groups of atoms may be attached to the basic monosaccharide molecules, subtly changing their properties.
All of this adds up to a massive headache for scientists trying to understand the structures and functions of complex sugars. Do the maths and even a mere six-unit sugar of a kind called a glycosaminoglycan has a staggering 12 billion possible versions. Researchers still have no idea how many of all the possibilities are actually exploited by nature, says Ram Sasisekharan, a bioengineer who leads a multidisciplinary team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "We're still scratching the surface in figuring out which sugars are biologically relevant," he notes.

Glyconutritionals and Viral Infections
Glyconutritionals: Implications for Recovery from Viral Infections

Abstract
Most coxsackieviral infections are subclinical in humans, but among the estimated 10 million people annually infected by these viruses, those with nutrient-deficient diets are at highest
risk for developing diseases. This review discusses several studies that were performed to assess potential benefits of two glyconutrients on coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3)-induced models of
myocarditis or pancreatitis. Nutritional supplementation in the form of Aloe polymannose (AP) significantly increased titers of anti-viral antibodies in mice challenged with a CVB3 strain that
is both cardiovirulent and pancreatovirulent, but this dietary intervention had no effect on the virus-induced myocarditis in mice. In contrast, administration of a glyconutritional complex
(GC), composed of additional sugars required for cellular glycoconjugate synthesis, to mice challenged with the same CVB3 strain did provide significant benefits over a period of 8 months
to most animals in reversing virusinduced pancreatitis. Another study of rat hepatocytes showed that GC could block chemical depletion of free reduced glutathione, a major cellular antioxidant. These studies suggest a role for AP in stimulating the humoral immune system to produce antiviral antibodies and a role for GC in restoring the antioxidant potential of cells. Both glyconutrients may offer improved health to individuals who may or may not be infected by a virus that could subsequently cause disease.
VIRUSES, VIRAL DISEASES, AND THE COXSACKIEVIRUSES
GROUP B3 (CVB3)
Viruses are incredibly efficient parasites that require living cells in which they replicate, or reproduce, in large numbers. During replication, a virus takes command of the host cell and
converts some or all of the cellular metabolic processes, those normally required to maintain the health of the cell, toward synthesis of viral component parts and then assembly of these
components into new infectious virus particles. During the virus takeover of a cell, some to all essential daily cellular growth and repair processes may not be performed, and this virus-induced irreversible damage can lead to a reduction in function or death of the infected host cell. In addition to directly inducing death of the infected cell(s), viruses can also exert a number of other effects .
When a sufficient number of cells become damaged, major organs.
