Whilst reading 'Woman's Weekly September 2007' I found the very interesting article 'Yasmin Aga Khan: a troubling legacy' by Dian Guernsey.
Yasmin daughter of Rita Hayworth, the beautiful Hollywood's impossibly beautiful red-haired actress, cared for her mother who, it was eventually discovered, had Alzheimer's disease.
Yasmin gave up her classical music and voice career to care for her mother and after her death in 1987 has spent time with"The Alzheimer's Association" which became her family. She appeared before the US Congress to argue for more research funding etc. and organised the first, hugely successful Rita Hayworth dinner and dance in 1984.
Dementia affects more than 200,000 people in Australia and 60% of those have Alzheimer's disease. Research suggests that dementia starts several decades before symptoms appear, "so the lifestyle choices you make now can help keep your brain healthy in later years", says Glenn Rees, national executive director of Alzheimer's Australia.
'Strategies include exercising at least three times a week to encourage blood flow to the brain; eating a diet high in fish, olive oil, nuts and anti-oxidant-rich foods eg. blueberries and broccoli; keeping neural pathways limber through activities such as crosswords, painting and reading; kicking bad habits, such as smoking.'
Mannatech Inc and founder Sam Caster, have produced glyconutrients and anti-oxidant products giving optimal health and wellness. Glyconutrients give the body's immune system the eight plant-based sugars it needs to function properly.
